Every Child Has a Special Need: The Need to Be Loved and Cared For

July 11, 2024

As I’ve worked with families planning for their children’s futures, I’ve come to realize that Special Needs Trusts are essential for children or adults with disabilities. These trusts allow them to receive support beyond what government benefits like SSI provide. Families with special needs children face unique challenges, such as planning for a guardian if they predecease their child and safeguarding assets to ensure continued public assistance eligibility. This level of care and concern is something every parent should have for the "what ifs."

This led me to a profound thought: every child has special needs, even if they are "normal"—and as we know, "normal" is just a setting on the dryer! Every child, regardless of abilities or disabilities, has the fundamental need to be loved and cared for.

Here are several practical ways to love and care for your dependents:

  1. Take Them to Church: Nurture their spiritual growth by involving them in church activities and fostering a personal relationship with Jesus. This can provide a sense of community, moral guidance, and a strong faith foundation.
  2. Spend Quality Time Together: Engage in activities that your child enjoys. This fosters a strong bond and helps you understand their unique needs and preferences.
  3. Establish a Routine: Consistent routines provide a sense of stability and security, which is especially important for children with special needs.
  4. Create a Safe and Supportive Environment: Ensure your home is a safe and nurturing space where your child feels secure and supported. This includes physical safety and emotional well-being.
  5. Advocate for Their Needs: Be proactive in advocating for your child’s needs in school, healthcare, and community settings. Ensure they have access to the resources and support they require.
  6. Encourage Independence: Foster your child's independence by teaching them life skills appropriate for their age and ability. This builds their confidence and prepares them for the future.
  7. Provide Consistent Emotional Support: Be there for your child emotionally. Listen to their concerns, celebrate their achievements, and offer comfort during tough times.
  8. Stay Informed and Educated: Keep yourself informed about your child's condition and the best ways to support their development. Attend workshops, join support groups, and consult with professionals.
  9. Establish a Financial Plan: Set up savings and investments to secure your child's financial future. Seek out professional help to plan and invest well for the future
  10. Promote Social Connections: Encourage your child to build friendships and engage in social activities. Social connections are vital for emotional and psychological well-being.
  11. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Ensure your child has a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and sufficient rest. A healthy lifestyle supports overall well-being.
  12. Plan for the Future: Think ahead and make plans for your child's future, including their education, career, and living arrangements. This provides a clear path and reduces uncertainty.
  13. Practice Patience and Understanding: Show patience and understanding towards your child’s unique challenges and milestones. Celebrate their progress, no matter how small.

One of the most loving actions you can take for your family is to have a plan that ensures their well-being and financial security. While not everyone needs a special needs trust—only those receiving certain government benefits do—everyone needs a plan.

We are here to help navigate these complexities. Together, we can create a comprehensive plan that provides for those you love, ensuring they are cared for in the best possible way.
